This is my recreation of the piece "We can do it" by J. Howard Miller. As I am not a photogenic person, and I've seen many other people online who did this challenge using stuffed animals or pets to recreate their work, I used my stuffed animal Yoshi (known from our adventures with an Italian plumber). I started by tying my headscarf to him, and taking a picture. After, I uploaded the image into procreate, cut away the background, added a shirt, some make up and a little texture along with the background.
I chose to recreate this piece after getting many comments from my friends about my headscarf that i wear more often then not. So I decided to look into the work a little further. It was a wartime poster in 1943, posted around westinghouse electric to boost female worker moral. As the men were off fighting during world war II, women working was becoming more common, and up until this time period women present in the workplace was rare. I would say they needed a little boost, but this poster wasn't actually meant to encourage woman to join the war effort, rather, to work harder at the job they were already doing. Though, we have re-contextualized it to be an image of empowerment.
I picked Yoshi to represent a sort of side character, who helped the main character along in his journey to save the princess. Although the men in world war II were the main characters fighting off the Nazis, the woman back home represented, in my mind, the little dinosaurs helping the economy and their families while the men were away "saving the princess". I don't know if I explained that good but there it is.
